Riddell 1950s RT2 Vintage Football Helmet Rare Snap In Jaw Pads Type Repairs!

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: THIS IS NOT A REPRODUCTION!

This extremely rare vintage and original Riddell RT2 full size Football Helmet, from the 1940s, complete with original old school 6-strap suspension and leather crown pad. Although there are no indications of size, our best guess is a size 7 1/4 as it fit me quite comfortably with a little room and my hat size is 7.

Helmet has iconic 32-hole venting in top of shell, and also comes with amazing repairs! Most helmets that needed this much repair were discarded or destroyed. This amazing specimen is a true testament to how things were done back in the 1940s and 1950s! Many teams simply turned to unconventional means to repair equipment because they didn’t have spare or extra helmets to use when one was broken. This example of Americana shows not only a vintage snap-in leather jaw pad, but on the other side is a riveted-in “dog ear” leather jaw pad, probably added once the repairs you see had to be implemented.

This would be one of the first RT2 helmets produced by RIDDell prior to them moving on to the RK4 helmets. Helmet has had a facemask applied at some point prior to our owning it.

Based on shape and number of holes in the top of the shell, as well as consideration of the suspension, our best estimate would indicate this helmet was manufactured in the late 1940s and was most likely used through the mid 1950s.

This beauty is crafted in beautiful blue with a painted white center stripe, exactly as the Baltimore Colts used during the 1950s too! And, of course, this helmet has the Riddell trademark on the right rear side, as found on most RT2 helmets.
